Concept 7 – Netiquette
Netiquette is a word derived from the word Etiquette, and explains the use of positive and negative conduct in online communication. Essentially, netiquette is etiquette on the internet, network etiquette. Some form of knowledge regarding netiquette is important for an online communicator to possess, as it can prevent many negative situations from occurring. Many people and organisations have policies regarding the use of communication through email and the use of the internet at the work place.
Netiquette describes the do’s and don’ts of network etiquette and each individual, or organisation can offer different recommendations as to what to follow and what to be careful of when communicating through the internet. It is important to remember that there are no such enforced rules with network etiquette, however they are recommendations as to how to behave and act whilst communicating through online means.. An excerpt from the book “Netiquette written by Virginia Shea states that there are ten core rules or recommendations to follow regarding netiquette
1. Remember the Human – remember with online communication you are still talking to another person

1. Remember the Human – remember with online communication you are still talking to another person
2. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life – remember that adhering and keeping ethical standards and not breaking the law still applies online.
3. Know where you are in cyberspace –remember that is said to one person, could be offensive to another
4. Respect other people's time and bandwidth – other peoples time can be taken up with long unnecessary emails, or unrelated posts about a topic. This is true in discussion groups, make sure to read what has already been said and don’t repeat what others say. Also keep email’s to as short as possible.
5. Make yourself look good online – write well and be respectful and people will treat you well.
6. Share expert knowledge – If you know an answer to a solution, don’t be scared to post. It might solve someone a lot of time
7. Help keep flame wars under control – flaming is when a user posts or discusses a heated topic with a strong opinion. It’s allowed but be careful with what you say.
8. Respect other people's privacy – remember privacy still applies on the internet
9. Don't abuse your power – don’t abuse the higher access you have over someone else
10. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes – remember everyone makes mistakes.
Online communication has become recognised as an important tool nowadays. Like verbal and written communication, strong online communication skills is also of a benefit to an individual in today’s society. Internet and online chat, either through email or use of chat programs such as Yahoo Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, is becoming more common throughout homes, generic users, and also throughout workplaces. The increase in the use of these programs, and in the use of online communication in general shows that the ability to provide strong online communication is becoming an important skill to develop. Netiquette recommendations are based towards those of the online communicator. Learning and practicing certain netiquette techniques and guidelines can become important for the user to harness, in order to be able to develop the strong online communication skills that are becoming more popular as time.

29. The challenge of ‘fast’ data
The internet offers a different resource to that we have used previously. Text Books, sound files, newspapers, magazines are all valuable resources, however they differ in one significant way to that of the internet. The evolution of the electronic resource means that the data available may not always be the same every day, it has the ability to be ever-changing.
Data available on the internet are ever changing, that’s both and advantage and disadvantage of electronic resources. The advantage occurs as users are able to constantly be subject to information that can be updated monthly, daily, weekly, even by the second information can be updated through the internet. This differs from that of books or newspapers that are printed once and can only be updated either monthly or daily. A good example of news or information that is updated approximately every thirty seconds is the newspaper on the internet www.news.com.au/heraldsun. An online newspaper has the ability to provide up to date news as it happens, breaking news, weather updates, they can be reported on as soon as they are known. This is in contrast to the daily printed newspaper, which can only provide information at one time during the day, and reports on the news from the day before. The internet as a resource allows for today’s news to be displayed, whereas the information from the print newspaper reports on yesterday’s news. The disadvantage of changing data is the fact that information, or data that is important at one stage, can be lost with another update. It is hard to constantly keep the same information and read the same data when it is being changed regularly.
The other downside to the internet as a resource is that it is the website developer’s choice as to whether information on the site is updated or remains stale and not updated. A webpage can remain as it is, for as long as it is hosted, there is no pressure on those responsible to update their site regularly. This can mean that those doing internet research can often come across a site which may provide relevant information, however this information can be rendered useless as it is outdated and can therefore not be used as it is considered irrelevant information
The internet, and the availability of ‘fast’ data has proven to be of great benefit to students in their education as well. A memo authored by Paul Hitlin and Director Lee Rainie regarding Teens, technology and school details how students, teachers and their parents found the use of the internet has a positive impact on education (Hitlin P, Rainie L, August 2005). This can be related to the fact of the availability of resources on the internet being easily accessible, compared to books in libraries or magazines, newspapers etc.
In conclusion, the ‘fast’ data available on the internet can have both a negative impact for the user. As mentioned above, there is no set rule for a website to be updated regularly, and a website updated regularly can also cause an issue on the data available. However, updated changing data allows the user to have access to the information that is relevant at the time.

It is useful as it allows the reader to understand how website change regularly can help provide relevant up to date information

It can be said to be a credible source as it provides information on research completed by a director and research assistant from the PEW Internet and American Life project. It is useful as it provides information and statistics on the importance and use of internet on education. It is significant to the topic because of the information it provides.
26. Privacy and Security
For many years users have been able to browse the internet, for hobby, school, or business and have been able to find a range of sources that offer a variety of knowledge and opinions and information regarding the topic they were after. However the internet can not only be used for sourcing information, but for paying bills, shopping, playing games, subscribing to newsletters, in fact the application of the internet varies for each user and to what they wish to do. The internet is a wonderful thing. The information is vast, the knowledge is varied, it’s application diverse.
Why then do people say the internet is dangerous? Something that offers such a variety of applications and can help so many people in their day to day lives can’t be dangerous, can it? Most people use the internet safely; there are more responsible users than irresponsible users on the internet. However there are individuals and organisations on the internet that do prey on those safer, less informed internet users. “Security and Privacy are two major issues that continue to raise concerns with all those involved with the internet” (Underwood L, June 12 2001). These days there are many forms of dangers on the internet. Viruses, phishing, internet fraud, SPAM are all terms that are common with internet users of today’s generation and which are a nuisance to the use of the internet, however 10 years ago these terms were just being discovered. In today’s society the importance of remaining private and secure whilst surfing the www is paramount to the safety of the individual or individual’s computer content.
Security and privacy on the internet is something that should be thought about seriously. It can affect our browsing of the internet, the use of the internet and in some cases can have detrimental affects to the lives of the individual.
There are even instances where users leave sensitive information on a website and they do not even know, this is done through databases stored in the background of websites. “As individuals do more – shopping, talking, working – on-line, they leave private information behind in databases stored on Internet-connected servers” (Stanford Law School, March 13-14 2004)
It is important for an internet user to know what information should remain private, and what information can be told. Online chat-rooms can be a dangerous environment for those not used to their nature. It is important not to give out your real name, or your real address as you need to always remember – it is not just a computer you are talking to it’s an actual person, and this person, even though they have told you they are a 16 year old female from Alabama, may in fact be a 40yr old male who has a criminal record.
The internet has become a tool that many can not live without; it is a marvellous resource with the ability to be used for many applications. It has become such an important part of our day to day lives in this modern era. And if the right precautions are taken the internet can be a safe place to be. If the user is careful with their security and privacy and is aware of what can occur, they will become less affected from the concerns of the internet.

3. Effective Internet communication combines technical and communicative competence
Communication is a skill that everyone aims to improve and develop an excellence in. Communication allows us to be able to get more out of life, whether it is conversing with a colleague, getting that pay rise, negotiating with a salesman, or writing a letter. However Verbal and written communications are no longer the main forms of communication that a user can be skilled in. Online communication, or Internet communication, is now becoming an important skill for individuals to harness, learn and practice, as the use of the internet grows and is used throughout most households and by most individuals at least Australia wide (Australian Bureau of Statistics: Use of the Internet by Householders, Australia, Nov 2000).
Internet communication skills can be improved through practice and constant use. The more a user communicates through the means of the internet, the greater they will become in adapting to different online situations. It is important to note that internet communication is not restricted to just using the email. Internet communication can come in many forms. Forum’s or discussion boards allow users to discuss certain topics or subjects with other individuals that they may have never met but share similar interests with. Internet dating websites and social network sites are another way users can communicate online. Also, a popular way of talking online is using chat programs such as Windows Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.
However, it’s not just being able to talk online through many different forms that can improve skills but learning about the program being used and benefiting from different features that are installed with this application can also work to improve the internet communication skills of users. These days, an email can be more than just an electronic form of mail. Email programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes and even web based applications like Yahoo mail and Hotmail offer more features than just the original words on a white screen. Users are able to customize and enhance emails and also able to request a read receipt (which allows you to know when a user has read the email you sent), state whether an email is of high importance and recall a sent item before it is read by the recipient. Discussion groups and Messenger programs also have special features that enhance communication. Emoticons allow a user to express emotion through the internet, a status can tell other users if you are away or busy and changing text font color and size allows the user to express their individuality.
So in order to enhance internet communication levels it is important to understand that “effective internet communication combines technical and communicative competence”. In other words in order to be effective in online communication it is important to realize that not only do you need to be able to learn about how to converse online, it is also important for the user to understand the features of the program they are using.
